Embracing the Slope
This design-build project arose from the need to connect a vacation house perched on a rocky bluff with the beach below following the removal of a treacherous staircase. Rather than replacing the stair—the most direct route—a switchbacking trail was proposed to navigate the slope while also addressing the outstanding issues of hillside erosion and control of introduced species. The new trail allows users to move through the landscape, creating opportunities to engage with plants and geological features along the way. Burlap bags were used to form a series of terraces comprised of local earth that was cut and filled on-site to provide temporary embankment support. Native Okanagan shrubs and grasses were then planted between and within the burlap bags so that future root growth will stabilize the slope as the burlap decomposes over several seasons.
